Reveal the Power of Heart Connections

From the time I was very young, life seemed to be laid out before me, with all the plans neatly prepared. I was given the clothes to wear, the places to be, and the weight of important responsibilities. It felt as if everything was predetermined, and I was simply following the path set for me.

But before my formal and structured lifestyle began, I lived in eastern Tibet with my family. One day, when I was just seven years old, a search party arrived at my home. They were looking for the next Karmapa, and to my surprise, they declared that I was the chosen one. I still remember the excitement I felt, thinking it would be fun and full of adventures. Little did I know that it would turn out to be quite the opposite.

Suddenly, I found myself in a strictly controlled environment, separated from my family and expected to fulfill prescribed duties. The fantasy of an entertaining life as the Karmapa quickly faded away. Instead, I felt like a statue, placed in one spot with no freedom or personal connections.

Despite being separated from my loved ones and further away from them now, there is no sense of separation in my heart. The love I feel for them and for my homeland remains strong. Though our contact is infrequent, every conversation with my mother brings us closer together, with the feeling of love binding us with each passing second.

In this gathering of diverse backgrounds and ideas, we witness the beauty of connection and friendship. It symbolizes the shrinking world and the opportunities for deeper connections among people. However, as we focus on outward development and increasing our connections with others, we must not forget the importance of inward development and caring the connections within our own hearts.

While we have discussed design and technology during this conference, it is crucial to invest our energy in improving the technology of the heart. Despite the wonderful advancements in the world, I still sense an impediment when it comes to connecting on a heart-to-heart or mind-to-mind level. Something seems to be getting in the way.

As a spiritual leader, I strive to open my heart to others and foster genuine connections. However, I have been advised to prioritize intelligence over heart-to-heart connections to safeguard myself. This paradox is at play in my relationship with the concept of deep connections.

One memorable conversation I had was with a group from Afghanistan, where we discussed the contrasting approaches to spirituality between the Muslim and Buddhist traditions. We explored the tragedy of the destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas and found a positive perspective in the collapse of barriers, similar to the falling of the Berlin Wall, which opened doors for further communication and understanding.

The development and growth we discuss should not burden us as human beings but should be utilized to enhance our fundamental way of life. We must be aware that some aspects of progress come at the cost of destabilizing the very foundation on which we stand. It is essential to have sincere motivation and allow the information we possess to bring about a change in our hearts.

To ensure our future well-being and deep sense of happiness, we need to immerse ourselves fully in the work we do, appreciating every moment. Sometimes, we focus on grand ideas of happiness while overlooking the subtle signs of happiness present in every breath we take.

Each one of you possesses incredible talent and has much to offer to the world. Let us take a moment to appreciate the fortunate opportunity we have had to come together, exchange ideas, and grow a strong aspiration and positive energy that can be spread and planted in every corner of the world.

Growing up, I had a unique upbringing filled with responsibilities that were thrust upon me from a very young age. It felt as if everything was predetermined, with little room for personal choice or exploration. The plans for my life were already laid out, and I was expected to conform.

However, before this structured lifestyle began, I lived with my family in eastern Tibet. It was during this time that a search party arrived at our home, searching for the next Karmapa. To my surprise, they deemed me as the chosen one. I can still vividly recall the excitement and anticipation that coursed through me. It seemed like an intriguing adventure filled with fun and play.

Yet, the reality of my new role quickly unfolded in a different manner. Placed in a strictly controlled environment, I was separated from my loved ones, including my parents. The freedom and joy I had envisioned were replaced by a life of stringent rules and numerous responsibilities. Rather than living a vibrant and engaging existence, I felt more like a statue, confined to one place.

Despite the physical separation from my family and being further distanced from them after escaping Tibet at the age of 14, my heart remains deeply connected to them. Even though our interactions are infrequent, every conversation with my mother over the telephone strengthens the bond between us. With each passing second, our love brings us closer, transcending the physical distance.

In this gathering of diverse backgrounds and ideas, I believe it is remarkable to witness people from different places coming together, exchanging thoughts, and fostering friendships. It serves as a symbolic reflection of our world, which is becoming smaller and more interconnected. While it is wonderful to witness this external growth, we must also remember the importance of inner development and growing deeper connections within our hearts.

Throughout the conference, there were discussions about design and technology, and it is crucial to recognize the significance of caring the technology of the heart. Despite the progress we see in the world, there is still a sense of impediment when it comes to establishing genuine heart-to-heart or mind-to-mind connections. Something seems to hinder the realization of these profound connections.

As a spiritual leader, I have faced an interesting paradox in my relationship with the concept of heart-to-heart connections. While I strive to open my heart and connect genuinely with others, I have also been advised to prioritize intelligence over such connections, in order to protect myself. This paradox highlights the challenges and complexities I encounter in my role.

Reflecting on the development and growth discussed during the conference, it is essential to ensure that progress does not burden us as human beings. Instead, it should enhance our fundamental way of life. We must remain aware that some aspects of progress come at the cost of destabilizing the very foundation on which we stand. Thus, sincere motivation is of utmost importance, allowing the information we possess to bring about positive changes within our hearts.

However, as we celebrate the external growth and increasing opportunities for connection, it is equally important to focus on the inward development and the caring of our heart connections.

From a personal perspective, I have witnessed the challenges and rewards of establishing heart-to-heart connections. As I navigate my role as a spiritual leader, my aim has always been to open my heart to others, to foster genuine connections that transcend superficialities. We explored the differences in approach to spirituality between the Muslim and Buddhist traditions. The destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas, an event perceived by many as a tragedy, became the focal point of our discussion. However, even in the face of such loss, we found a glimmer of hope—a positive perspective that allowed us to see the collapse of physical representations as an opportunity for deeper communication and understanding. It was akin to the fall of the Berlin Wall, where barriers that had kept people apart crumbled, creating pathways for connection.

As we think the development and advancements discussed in this conference, it is crucial to recognize that progress should not burden us as individuals. Instead, it should serve as a catalyst for improving our fundamental way of life. We must remain mindful that certain aspects of progress come at the cost of destabilizing the very foundations that support us. Therefore, it becomes imperative to approach our pursuits with sincere motivation and allow the information we possess to inspire meaningful changes within our hearts.
